Miyagi Zao Sumikawa

Miyagi Zao Sumikawa is a compact ski resort located on the Miyagi Prefecture side of the Zao mountain range, operating between 840 and 1,350 meters elevation. What makes this resort particularly appealing is its impressive annual snowfall of 950 centimeters (over 31 feet), ensuring consistently excellent powder conditions throughout the winter season. This substantial snow accumulation rivals many of Japan's most famous resorts, yet Sumikawa remains relatively uncrowded and off the international tourist radar.

The resort features 8 runs serviced by 3 lifts, making it an intimate and manageable destination ideal for families, beginners, and intermediate skiers looking to enjoy quality Japanese powder without the overwhelming scale of mega-resorts. While the terrain variety is limited compared to larger areas, the reliable snow conditions and the resort's position within the greater Zao region—famous for its "snow monsters" (juhyo) frost-covered trees—provide a quintessentially Japanese skiing experience. Note that night skiing is not available, so plan to maximize daylight hours on the slopes.
